2011 NFL Draft Round 1 Diary

Welcome to our draft diary, where we will be updating live throughout most of the first round.

[7:03] Looks like Newton is gonna be the first pick. Hopefully they get some other talent around him because he needs a solid supporting cast and some patience or he will fail. – DP

1. Carolina – Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

[7:05] NFL Network giving away the #1 pick early. Why kill the suspense of the pick? Some of the best moments of the draft are the surprises in the top 10 and the reaction of the crowd.. – DP

[7:11] So where will the Denver Broncos, new coach John Fox, and new Executive VP of Football Operations, John Elway go? – CM

2. Denver – Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M

[7:15] Buffalo’s got a lot of needs here.  Fitzpatrick did a commendable job at QB last season, but is he the future?  They’ve sure got needs at just about every position besides wideout.  As one of the league’s worst run-defenses, I’d probably go with Dareus here, but we’ll see.  – CM

3. Buffalo – Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama

[7:22] The Bengals are in shambles right now.  Ochocinco wants out, and Carson Palmer says he’d rather retire than play QB for them again.  Do they try to replace the WR or the QB; A.J. Green or Blaine Gabbert?  – CM

4. Cincinnati – A.J. Green, WR, Georgia

[7:26] Love the Green pick, he’s gonna be a spectacular receiver for years to come, and hasn’t shown any signs of being a Diva (always a positive trait in receivers).  Arizona’s on the clock, and they’ve gotta take Blaine Gabbert don’t they?  I mean, most mock’s have had CB-Patrick Peterson going here, but I don’t think Hall, Skelton, or Anderson are franchise guys.  Gotta go with Gabbert! – CM

5. Arizona – Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU

[7:31] To say I’m shocked is an understatement.  I guess the Cardinals believe in Hall, Skelton or Anderson.  Not to take anything away from Peterson, he’s arguably the best player in this draft, but this is a Quarterback’s league.  I can only imagine Larry Fitzgerald’s frustration.  And now they’re saying the Falcons are trading up to the Browns pick to get Julio Jones.  Can that offense get any better? – CM

6. Atlanta – Julio Jones, WR, Alabama

[7:37] Love the pick, but did they give up too much?  Only time will tell. – CM

[7:39] Gotta believe that San Francisco will take Blaine Gabbert here.  Wouldn’t be surprised if they go with Nick Fairley or Aldon Smith though. – CM

7. San Francisco – Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri

[7:43] Well Gabbert is still there, if he falls past Tennessee and Washington, I’ll be done guessing where he’s going to go.  Could see Tennessee go with Fairley, they’ve been looking for a guy to replace Haynesworth. – CM

8. Tennessee – Jake Locker, QB, Washington

[7:46] Absolutely stunned here.  As a Vikings fan, I wanted Locker.  Tennessee must know something everyone else doesn’t.  Cowboys on the clock, maybe this is where Fairley goes? Or maybe a trade? – CM

9. Dallas – Tyron Smith, OT, USC

[7:54] Great pick for the Cowboys, they need some help protecting Romo.  Okay, the Redskins HAVE to take Gabbert, or Amukamara.  All Vikings fans should be crossing their fingers that Gabbert falls past Washington! – CM

10. Jacksonville – Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri

[8:01] Can you hear me screaming? Yea, I thought so.  I should have known it was too good to be true.  Gabbert’s gone, and will challenge Garrard for the starting job from day 1.  Houston on the clock, they need help in the secondary.  This could be where Amukamara goes, possibly a defensive lineman like Quinn, Bowers, or Fairley. – CM

11. Houston – J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin

[8:08] Good pick here. Solid kid. Will fit well opposite Mario Williams.  Okay, Vikings fans, this is what we’ve been waiting for.  If they don’t trade out of this, we need to take Prince Amukamara!  Our secondary has been bad long enough, Chris Cook didn’t work out last year, go get a shut-down guy to take over for years to come.  Wouldn’t complain about Quinn, Fairley, or Bowers either, but I think Prince is the best choice here. – CM

[8:14] C’mon Vikes, I’m tired of waiting.  Just tell us you blew it already. – CM

12. Minnesota – Christian Ponder, QB, Florida State

13. Detroit – Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn

[8:24] Okay, I’m back. Sorry, I had to go out and defend the Vikings pick to all my Facebook and Twitter followers.  For those of you who don’t know about Ponder, he’s a true football-mind, doesn’t have the biggest arm, but definitely has what it takes to get it done mentally.  And after drafting big arm after big arm, I’m excited to see what a change in philosophy will do for us.  – CM

[8:26] Side note, Detroit is going to be a damn tough team to run against for years to come.  Can’t say I don’t miss their years of endlessly drafting WR’s. – CM

14. St. Louis – Robert Quinn, DE, UCLA

[8:28] Quinn fell a lot further than many expected; the Rams definitely got a quality pass-rusher at a good price.  Miami’s on the clock, and I’m almost certain they’ll take Mark Ingram here.  Ronnie Brown is about to turn 30, and Ricky Williams can’t go forever. – CM

15. Miami – Mike Pouncey, C, Florida

[8:35] A little surprised with that pick.  I guess Miami feels they can get another good year from Williams and Brown.  One things for sure, they’ll be able to run left.  Washington is back on the clock, could this Amukamara?  They definitely need help in the secondary. – CM

16. Washington – Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue

[8:46] That Patriots are on the clock now, and they’ve got a lot of valuable players to choose from.  Cameron Jordan? Prince Amukamara? Mark Ingram? Let’s see – CM

[8:48] Of course, the Belichick thing to do is trade the pick, so that’s always a possibility. – CM

17. New England – Nate Solder, OT, Colorado

[8:49] Typical New England pick, a team guy that can fit in well on an already talented offensive line.  Thought pairing McCourtey with Amukamara would have been scary as well, but no problem with Solder.  The Chargers are on the clock, not sure where they’re going to go here.  Corey Liuget? He was a guy I liked for Vikings pick. – CM

18. San Diego – Corey Liuget, DE, Illinois

[8:55] Love this kid. He’s going to be star, and fit quite well in the Chargers system.  They’ve got good pass rushing already in Shaun Phillips, so Liuget will have a solid chance at putting up big sack numbers.  The Giants are on the clock, I’d bet they’d love Mark Ingram, but they could choose to address a need at CB with Prince Amukamara. – CM

19. New York Giants – Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska

[9:01] Perfect fit for the Giants.  They need a guy that can go out a cover either Dez Bryant, or Miles Austin, and DeSean Jackson, or Jeremy Maclin twice a year.  Tampa Bay is on the clock, and if they’re not sold on LaGarrette Blount, you can bet it’s going to be Mark Ingram. – CM

20. Tampa Bay – Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa

[9:10] Smart choice, thought they might go with Mark Ingram because he was there.  They clearly stuck to their board here, and Clayborn will help them get out of the basement in sacks.  The Chiefs are up next.  I think they’re going to go with Gabe Carimi to sure-up that offensive line, or Akeem Ayers to help out their defense. – CM

[9:17] Cleveland trades up, could it be Cam Jordan or Justin Houston. – CM

21. Cleveland – Phil Taylor, DL, Baylor

[ 9:20] Wrong again, they went with Phil Taylor.  I guess that makes sense after they let Shaun Rogers go.  Indy’s on the clock and they’ve been showing Anthony Castonzo talking on the phone, so I’m that’s who they’re going with. – CM

22. Indianapolis – Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College

[9:22] Best-case scenario just came true for Indy.  They were in dire need of an offensive lineman, and they couldn’t have had a better one fall into their lap.  I’m sure Peyton Manning is breathing a sigh of relief.  The Eagles are up, and this should be a CB; either Jimmy Smith or Aaron Williams.  Slight chance they go with Danny Watkins or Gabe Carimi to help out that O-Line. – CM

23. Philadelphia – Danny Watkins, OL, Baylor

[9:32] What a surprise, my original thought was wrong, but a side thought was dead-on.  Watkins is going to be one of Michael Vick’s best friends; he’s spent time at Baylor blocking for another rushing QB, Robert Griffin, and should help keep guys like Demarcus Ware, Osi Umenyiora, and Brian Orakpo off his back.  Saints on the clock, they’ve got to get something defensively; either Marvin Austin, Justin Houston, or Robert Ayers.  Although, with questions about durability in their backfield (Thomas, Ivory, and Bush), maybe this is where Mark Ingram goes. – CM

24. New Orleans – Cam Jordan, DE, California

[9:40] Very good pick here for the Saints, they really need a top pass-rusher, and Jordan is exactly that.  Now Seattle is sitting with exactly what they wanted; a potential franchise QB.  So who are they going to take, Mallett or Dalton.  I’d personally go with Dalton, I think there’s too many character issues with Mallett, and Pete Carroll loves accurate arms over powerful arms.  Or maybe they go for the every-down RB in Mark Ingram. – CM

[9:47] Okay, looking over the players still left, I have no idea what the Seahawks are going to do.  There are so many impact players left on the board.  What about Bowers, Ayers, Carimi, Jimmy Smith, Marvin Austin, Aaron Williams, and Torrey Smith? – CM

25. Seattle – James Carpenter, OT, Alabama

[9:51] Hmmm, I named all those players, and Seattle just makes me look stupid with the Carpenter pick; wasn’t even considering him here.  I figured he’d be somewhere in the middle 2nd round, but hey, I’m not the expert.  Baltimore is on the clock and they NEED a defensive back.  Last year was a rough one for their secondary, so it’s almost a sure thing they’re going to select either Jimmy Smith out of Colorado, or Aaron Williams out of Texas. – CM

[10:03] Okay, this is really pissing me off.  This is bringing back horrendous memories of the 2003 draft. – CM

26. Kansas City – Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Pittsburgh

[10:05] Don’t know much about this kid; didn’t know he was even considered as a 1st rounder.  I’d have thought Torrey Smith out of Maryland would have at least gone before Baldwin; who knows though?  For KC’s sake, I hope it’s not a Darius Heyward-Bey type of reach.  On anther note, this Ravens thing is ridiculous; they’d better hope they don’t lose out on Smith or Williams. – CM

27. Baltimore – Jimmy Williams, CB, Colorado

28. New Orleans – Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama

[10:08] Finally! The Ravens got exactly who they wanted/needed.  Everyone’s worried about character issues, not me.  When you put him in a locker room with Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, slim chance he steps out of line.  And now New Orleans makes me look smart; I’ve been trying to find a spot for Ingram, and when they passed on him at 24, it was down to the Patriots and Packers to make him a 1st rounder.  Now that he’s off the board, Mikel Leshoure has to be moved up for teams with a need at RB for tomorrow.  The Bears are on the clock, pretty sure they’re taking an O-lineman here; got to protect Jay Cutler and open up holes for Matt Forte, and Gabe Carimi is starring them right in the face. – CM

29. Chicago – Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin

[10:19] Perfect fit for the Bears.  I would have been disappointed if they went somewhere else (as an impartial blogger), but as a Vikings fan, I really could care less what they do. The Jets are on the clock, and their fans in attendance are chanting for Da’Quan Bowers.  Could be a great fit for a guy with injury concerns that will no-doubt play with a chip on his shoulder.  He seems like a Rex Ryan kind of guy.

30. New York Jets – Muhammad Wilkerson, DT, Temple

[10:25] Fits their defensive scheme well.  Maybe Bowers’ knee is much worse than anyone thought.  Steelers are on the clock.  They’ve got to be going with the best corner back available, and that’s Aaron Williams our of Texas. – CM

31. Pittsburgh – Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State

[10:28] Surprised they didn’t go with a defensive back.  Everything I’d been hearing was that they were going to go with the best corner available.  And finally, the Packers up to end the 1st round, who’s it going to be?  I’m guessing they’ll go defensive here, either Bowers, Houston, or Ayers.  And of course, with this being the final pick of day 1, there’s always the chance of a trade. – CM

32. Green Bay – Derrick Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State
